Are you interested in learning to ride a motorcycle? Whether it’s a matter of getting from A to B in your regular commute or you are looking for a new recreational experience and the joy of adventure rides we have broken it down in steps.

Step 1

Pre Learner Course

To be eligible for the Pre Learner course you must have held a provisional or open car licence for 1 year.

  • Your first step is to book the 2 day Pre Learner course with us. Please note you must complete both days within 30 days of each other.

Step 2

Motorcycle Knowledge Test

To be eligible to sit the motorcycle knowledge test you must have completed the 2 day Pre Learner Course.

  • Your next step is to sit the Motorcycle Knowledge Test with the Department of Transport. You can sit the test online, or visit your nearest Department of Transport.
  • Once you have successfully completed the online knowledge test you will be issued with your motorcycle learners licence (RE L).

You are required to hold your learners for a 3 month period. During this 3 month learner period you can ride any Learner Approved Motorcycle, as long as you are accompanied by someone who has their restricted or unrestricted motorcycle licence.

Step 3

Hazard Perception Test

To be eligible to sit the hazard perception test you must have completed the 2 day Pre Learner Course and motorcycle knowledge test.

From 1 July 2021 all learner motorcycle licence holders must pass the hazard perception test before they can take the Q-Ride RE Course or RE practical riding test. All learner motorcycle licence holders must pass the motorcycle hazard perception test before upgrading their learner licence.

  • You can take the test at any stage during your learner licence period.
  • The hazard perception test will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes, you will need at least that amount of time connected to the internet.

Step 4

RE Licence Course

To be eligible for the RE licence course you must have held your motorcycle learners (RE L) for 91 days and completed the hazard perception test.

  • Once you have demonstrated your competency we will issue you with an online QRide certificate. You are then required to upgrade your licence online or by visiting your nearest Department of Transport center.

On your restricted (RE O) motorcycle licence you can ride any learner approved bike unsupervised. For the first 12 months you are unable to carry a pillion passenger and you must have zero alcohol in your system when riding.

If you wish to upgrade your licence you are required to hold your restricted (RE O) licence for 2 years before you are eligible to upgrade. However, if you are happy riding LAMS bikes you can stay on your restricted licence as long as you want.
